Background Information

The Preamble of the Charter of the United Nations begins with the words “We the peoples of the United Nations determined to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind.” These opening words continue to serve as a reminder that the UN itself was created to help prevent war, and of the ruin that war can bring upon the world.

Since the UN’s creation, the international community has not seen a conflict with the same level of globally widespread catastrophe as the Second World War, which motivated governments toward its creation. Unfortunately, the “scourge of war” has not disappeared. Now, nearly 70 years after the Charter’s signing, ongoing violent conflicts continue to inflict unimaginable suffering around the world. Some, like the current crisis in Syria, resulting in over 70,000 deaths so far, have no end in sight.

Although not every part of the world directly experiences widespread violent conflict, the implications of militarization touch every corner of the global village. Over $1.7 trillion is spent globally on armaments, making up about 2.5 percent of the world’s GDP. Figures like these have prompted UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to stress several times that “the world is over-armed and peace is underfunded.”

This Briefing will bring together a diverse and high-level panel to discuss the role of war in recent human history and how far humanity has advanced in limiting the scourge of war, particularly since the signing of the UN Charter. The Briefing will highlight various aspects of this topic, including the idea that peace comes through strength, the questioning of increasing militarism in society, and the view that the institution of war should be abolished, just as institutions of slavery, colonialism; apartheid and the prohibition of women from voting have been eliminated.

Submitted by BWC on Apr 24, 2013

Our Board President, Mike Felsen, published an editorial on haaretz.com this week, discussing how the relationship between Boston’s Jewish and Muslim communities could change in the wake of last week’s Marathon bombings, and proposing that we in the Jewish community work to strengthen our relationships with the local Muslim community as a way for all of us to heal. We are pleased to share his thoughts here.

Last week was a painful one for Boston, for my family and thousands of others. My wife and I raised three boys who sold Diet Coke and peanuts in the grandstands at Fenway Park, and cheered on the Celtics at Boston Garden. And for many years we stood together each April and applauded – just as the victims of the April 15 bombings did – the countless runners, from countless countries, who dashed, jogged or limped toward the finish line at the magnificent Boston Marathon.

Our warm memories are tarnished now. The harrowing events of last week have left us dazed. Unhappily, Boston now joins the ranks of those many places around the globe that have been victimized by terrorizing, if not always “terrorist,” acts of violence. What twisted logic could have inspired, or what hidden trauma could have impelled, two brothers to inflict wanton destruction on the lives of innocents? When the surviving brother is further questioned, we’ll hope to find some semblance of a response to the nagging question: Why did this happen?

The answer might, or might not, be informed by the revelation that the older, now-deceased brother seems to have veered into the world of radical Islam, perhaps sympathizing with extremists agitating for Chechen independence from Russia. His younger brother, a seemingly well-integrated college kid, might have followed him down that dark path. As of now, though, we still don’t know for sure.

Fallout of the bigoted kind began to appear even before anything was known about the perpetrators. The Boston Globe on April 19 reported an assault by a man in a Boston suburb on a head-scarfed woman pushing her child in a stroller. In New York, a 30-year-old Bangladeshi was attacked by a man uttering anti-Muslim slurs.

And what of Jewish-Muslim relations in Boston in the aftermath? Some relatively recent history is worth noting. Six years ago the minaret of a new mosque – the largest in New England – was capped in Boston’s Roxbury neighborhoodfollowing a two-year hiatus in construction marked by tense litigation. As reported in July 2007, the “controversy over allegations that the mosque had ties to terrorism had mushroomed into lawsuits and poisoned relations among the city’s Jewish and Muslim communities.”

The lawsuits were settled, but the Jewish community in Boston split between organizations and individuals who continued to resist engagement with the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center and the Muslim American Society – the organizations that run the mosque – and those who sought to break down suspicions and distrust through renewed dialogue and relationship-building. Even today, remnants of that rift remain. The weeks ahead will test how the various segments of the Boston Jewish community respond to the most recent events.

The ISBCC has been outspoken and unequivocal in its condemnation of the bombings as criminal acts. A recent message to ISBCC members reads: “Presently, our focus will remain on grieving for the victims and their families, praying for a speedy recovery for the injured, and leaving no stone uncovered in finding any other suspects connected to the bombings. We once again emphatically urge any of our congregants who have any additional information on the Boston bombings or the suspects to immediately call 1800 CALL-FBI.”

At the interfaith memorial service on April 18 in Boston’s South End, at which President Obama and a small group of civic and religious leaders addressed the 2,000 in attendance, the imam of the Roxbury mosque was slated to speak. Curiously, in his place in the program, the director of civil-rights outreach for a non-congregational, relatively low-profile organization called the American Islamic Congress was inserted instead. Other last-minute adjustments to the roster of speakers were also made, apparently by the governor’s office, which had assumed primary responsibility for the event. One wonders: Why was the decision made to opt for a Muslim representative who was not chosen by Muslims from their faith community?

Ronne Friedman is the senior rabbi at Boston’s largest synagogue, Temple Israel, and was the only rabbi to speak at Thursday’s interfaith service. He and other rabbis and Jewish communal leaders have met several times with the ISBCC’s Imam Suhaib Webb and members of his staff, at the Roxbury mosque and elsewhere. Rabbi Friedman was both surprised and disappointed that the imam had been removed from the roster of speakers. He told me he’s impressed with the depth, sincerity and religious scholarship the new imam brings, and genuinely delighted with the openness he has expressed to build more bridges and “to recognize the opportunities that exist when we act in concert for the sake of the city.”

Rabbi Friedman’s words capture the hopes of many in the greater Boston Jewish community: that out of the shocking and tragic events of last week, we can – among other ways to heal – find opportunities to enrich our relationships with Boston’s vibrant and diverse Muslim community. Doing so will call for each community to engage the other on terms based not on where we would like the other community to be, but on where that community is. It means both groups deciding to sit down, break bread, speak and listen without preconditions. It means developing sustained relationships that acknowledge and enjoy our commonalities and confront, respectfully and diplomatically, our disagreements.

We can only hope that the Jewish and Muslim communities in Boston honor the memory of the past week by opening a window that broadens and deepens their engagement with each other, including, for some, finding ways to dial down the tensions of recent years. A commitment to that project offers rewards for both groups, not least the enhanced security that’s a by-product of mutual respect and understanding. But perhaps above all, as Rabbi Friedman sagely observed, it’s “for the sake of the city.”

Mike Felsen has also published an editorial with the Common Ground News service, arguing that it is important to resist the impulse to become insulated within one’s own groups in the wake of a tragedy. You can read that editorial here.

Members of September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows send our deepest condolences to the families of those killed and our sincerest hopes for healing to all those injured in body and spirit in the tragic bombings during the Boston Marathon and its aftermath this past Monday. News of the events made us all immediately heartsick, knowing entirely too well the pain and sorrow that had been inflicted on innocent people.

It is our fervent hope that fear and outrage will not result in acts of revenge that will only inflict more pain and suffering, perpetuating the cycle of violence. Neither hatred nor despair will help solve the issues facing our society. We have the choice, now as always, to seek to understand what motivated this act and to find nonviolent, life affirming ways to prevent further violence.

The American public and our government officials must acknowledge two historical facts meticulously documented by the Constitution Project Task Force:

Torture of detainees in U.S. custody did occur, and

“Bless you for modeling the humanity of victims who still call for fairness and decency in prosecuting and finding perpetrators. I will share this inspiring statement. On this day after the Boston Marathon bombings we need to hear this before people rush to judgement again.”

PT member, Antonio Aversano, shared:

“It continues to be an honor to be aligned with Peaceful Tomorrows. After the death of my dad on Sept. 11th, 2001, a seed sprouted forth in my heart that radiated the truth that responding to violence with violence and to hatred with hatred was not the way forward for my life…I pray the recent wake up call through the tragedy in Boston helps all Americans remember such a bigger picture in our lives. That we are all connected beyond the abstract borders we place on each other…”

Jo Berry responded to one of our posts about the Boston bombing:

“Thanks for the important wonderful work you do, I add my voice to yours….It is so clear to me now that humanity heals together.”

“I am a United States citizen; I was born here and have lived here all of my 81 years. If I were a threat to this country’s safety, I would expect to be caught and brought to justice.

Report from the committee chair: Colleen Kelly

On Thursday, March 7th Colleen Kelly, Rita Lasar, Valerie Lucznikowska and Phyllis Rodriguez met with members of the defense team for Walid bin Attash, one of 5 defendants, including KSM in the ongoing pretrial hearings going on at Gitmo.
One of the most heartening things was to hear what a difference Blake and Phyllis have made by their presence in Guantanamo. Family members on all future delegations are being asked if they want to meet with the defense teams. (Prior they were only asked if they wanted to meet with the prosecution).
All Peaceful Tomorrows members should feel encouraged to add their names to the lottery to visit Guantanamo. Please note that those chosen to go can bring a ‘family member support person.’ Our presence HAS made a difference!
And Defense Initiated Victim Outreach (DIVO) was approved by Judge Pohl and will be starting soon (this is different from the defense teams reaching out themselves). DIVO is a third party of experienced specialists who have worked on capital cases in the US with victims families.
PT members Phyllis and Orlando Rodriguez and Rita Lasar met with DIVO member Tammy Krause and her associate Cathy Harrington on March 25th . Phyllis and Orlando met Tammy when PT members testified in the sentencing phase of the Moussaoui trial. Tammy wanted to reconnect with the Rodriguez family again and hear about Phyllis’ recent week at Guantanamo. It was a wonderful evening. The DIVO team will be meeting with PT members as the current events at Gitmo continue.
Please contact Colleen Kelly with any further questions.

The Iraqi Civil Society Solidarity Initiative [ICSSI] and the Baghdad Marathon want to extend our condolences to the families of the victims of the explosions that took place at the Boston Marathon, in Baghdad, and elsewhere in Iraq on April 15th. We grieve for all those killed and injured by these explosions targeting innocent, peaceful people. We reject the idea that violence is ever an effective means to make a statement or promote a cause. In solidarity with the people of Iraq and the U.S., we want to understand why these tragic events occur, to seek justice for the victims, but most importantly to promote a culture of nonviolence in which difference are resolved by dialogue, and build a world in which public sporting events create communities of trust and peace.

Boston

The two powerful bombs that exploded near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday afternoon killed at least three people, including an 8-year-old child, and injured more than 100. The Boston Marathon, while a world-class sporting event, has always also been about community values, charity, and good works. This year the 26th and final mile of the Marathon, where the bombs went off, had been dedicated to the victims of the shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. “26 miles to honor 26 victims,” read the banners and signs. The spirit of healing that slogan conveys is one of the ways that sports promote peace. It should inspire us all to work for nonviolence wherever we live.

Baghdad, and Beyond

Tragically, deadly explosions are all too common in Baghdad, but April 15th was a particularly devastating day. According to Iraqi security sources and medical personnel, at least 79 people were killed or wounded by six explosions in different parts of Baghdad. Seventeen car bombs went off in other parts of northern, central and southern Iraq, killing or wounding at least 219 people – nearly 300 in total. Among the victims were innocent bystanders, government officials, police, and candidates in the local elections that are to be held in Iraq on April 20th. This loss of human lives is intolerable.

Another Way

As we mourn and grieve, we must work together to promote alternatives to violence. We must reject the belief that individuals, movements, or nations can ever solve their problems through violence. We must reject calls for revenge or further violence. The ICSSI has promoted solidarity with nonviolence and human rights activists in Iraq since 2009. These activists are the greatest hope for a renewed and peaceful Iraq. One of their dreams is to hold a Baghdad Marathon. In the wake of the Boston tragedy, they have rededicated themselves to a race that will prove that the streets of Baghdad can be made peaceful for sports, and that sports can promote a culture of nonviolence. A Baghdad Marathon would be a vitally important event that could help us all to heal.

We have called for fair, transparent trials in American federal courts or an international court of law. Peaceful Tomorrows believes in strict adherence to the rule of law in all cases, but most especially in the legal and judicial processes related to 9/11 because of the unprecedented nature of the attacks and the egregious harm inflicted.

The means by which we as nations and citizens achieve justice is vital. Members of Peaceful Tomorrows have been deeply dismayed by the human rights violations and disregard for the U.S. Constitution that have occurred as part of our country’s response to the 9/11 attacks. No citizen can afford to remain ignorant of the details of how the United States treated people that it held in custody as it mobilized against a global terrorist threat.

To this end, The Constitution Project has performed an essential service to our nation and to the entire global community with its meticulously researched report on the detention and interrogation of terrorist suspects. The Constitution Project has definitively answered two questions in the affirmative: Did torture of detainees in U.S. custody occur? And, do senior U.S. leaders bear some responsibility for allowing and contributing to the spread of torture? The American public and our government officials must acknowledge these historical facts and consider the recommendations of the Task Force for addressing our failures.

We must work towards a full understanding of what has been done in our name and whether our national security was harmed in the process. Torture is neither effective nor legal, under any circumstances. Those who violated the law must be held accountable. Only by collectively confronting the truth will we restore respect for human rights and the rule of law.

New Committee Formed: The Steering Committee has created the Islamophobia and Intolerance Committee. Robyn Bernstein and Gloria Williams will serve as interim co-chairs for the first two years. At that time, the committee’s work will be re-evaluated to assess its need for continuation. The committee’s goal is to enhance peaceful coexistence with all people: Muslim, Black, White, Asian and Atheist. The work will be a continuation of community outreach that has been started by others, reaching out to groups that counter Islamophobia, intolerance and hatred. This is just the beginning. As we go forward, we hope you will join us and follow our lead.
